A lipoma is a round or oval-shaped lump of tissue that grows just beneath the skin. It’s made of fat, moves easily when you touch it and doesn’t usually cause pain. Lipomas can appear anywhere on the body, but they’re most common on the back, trunk (torso), arms, shoulders and neck.
Lipomas are benign soft tissue tumors. They grow slowly and are not cancerous.
Most lipomas don’t need treatment.
Lipomas aren’t usually painful, but they can be uncomfortable if they press against a nerve or develop near a joint.
If a lipoma is bothering you, with continuous pain, then an outpatient procedure is the only solution.
Home Medication Bring a list of all of the medications and vitamins that you are taking, including blood thinners, aspirin, or NSAIDS. Some medications can affect your recovery and response to anesthesia and may have to be adjusted before and after surgery. You can usually take your morning medication with a sip of water.
Anesthesia Let your anesthesia provider know if you have allergies, neurologic disease (epilepsy, stroke), heart disease, stomach problems, lung disease (asthma, emphysema), endocrine disease (diabetes, thyroid conditions), or loose teeth; if you smoke, drink alcohol, use drugs, including marijuana, or take any herbs or vitamins; or if you have a history of nausea and vomiting with anesthesia. If you smoke, let your surgical team know, and you should plan to quit. Quitting before your surgery, at least one month previously, can decrease respiratory and wound complications and increase your chances of staying smoke-free for life.
Length of Stay it depends on the size of the lipoma, normally the discharge is at the same day of the procedure.
Anesthesia, usually local, it will disappear in couple hours. You should not drive, drink alcohol, or make any big decisions for at least one day.
Nutrition soon after the procedure, you will be able to drink small amounts of liquid. If you do not feel sick, you can begin eating regular foods.
Activity slowly increases your activity. Patients usually take 1 to 3 weeks to return comfortably to normal activity.
Work and Return to School. Suture will be remove in 7-10 days. After this period of time, you will return to your activities if cicatrization went well.
Lipoma surgery by my team has a TOTAL COST (assistant, anesthesiologist, instrumentalist, chiro and medications, with one night stay) that starts at $25,000.00 MXN and will depend on the Hospital where you decide to perform the procedure.
